Stop Counting Days. Start Counting Proof.

A day counter tells you how long since you slipped. It doesn't tell you who you're becoming. Here's why the second thing matters more.

By Mike

A lot of people track their progress with a streak. Day 1, day 2, day 47. I understand the appeal. It’s simple, and for some people watching a number climb genuinely helps them not want to lose it.

But I’ve also seen exactly what happens when that number resets. It doesn’t just go back to zero. It usually takes something else down with it, a sense that all that progress just evaporated, that you’re starting completely over, that the person you were building toward isn’t real anymore.

That’s a brutal design for something meant to keep you motivated.

What a streak actually measures

A day count measures one thing: time since your last drink. That’s it. It says nothing about your bank account, your body, your sleep, your relationships, or who you’re actually becoming in the meantime.

And because it’s the only number in the room, it ends up carrying weight it was never built to carry. One slip and the whole scoreboard reads zero, regardless of everything else that’s true about you.

I’ve watched people online debate this endlessly, and honestly both sides have a point. Some people say counting days is actually the wrong way to think about it entirely, that alcohol becomes such a small part of your life the number stops mattering. Others say the streak itself is exactly what keeps them from drinking on a hard night, because they don’t want to lose it. Both can be true for different people.

What I’m more sure of: a streak, on its own, is a thin kind of evidence. It only tells you what didn’t happen. It doesn’t tell you what did.

What evidence actually looks like

Money is the easiest one to track and the hardest one to argue with. I didn’t budget or track spending on purpose. I just stopped drinking and watched 2,232 euros, and counting, show up in my account over six months that I hadn’t done anything special to earn.

I’ve seen someone else post their own running total, unprompted, nobody asked them to: total money saved, over eight thousand dollars. Numbers like that do something a streak can’t. They don’t just say “I didn’t drink.” They say “look what not drinking actually built.”

Weight is another one. 18kg came off me in seven months without a diet or a gym membership, purely as a side effect of stopping. That’s not motivational trivia. That’s physical, visible proof that something fundamental changed, sitting right there in how your clothes fit.

Sleep. Mornings you actually remember. Conversations you were fully present for. None of that shows up on a day counter. All of it shows up if you’re paying attention to the right things.

Why this matters at the exact moment it counts

When a craving hits, “I’m on day 12” doesn’t do much heavy lifting. It’s an abstract number, easy for your brain to argue past. “One night won’t matter, you’ll just start day 1 again, no big deal.”

“I’ve saved 1,400 euros and lost 9kg” is a much harder thing to argue past. That’s not an abstract commitment. That’s tangible proof of a life that’s already different, sitting right there in front of you. The negotiation has a much harder time working against evidence than it does against a number that resets.

That’s the actual mechanism. Not motivation. Redirection. The craving says you need this. The evidence says look at what you’ve already built without it. Evidence wins that argument more often than willpower ever did for me.

Your progress doesn’t erase

If you slip, a streak punishes you exactly when you’re already feeling your worst, by wiping the board clean. Evidence doesn’t work that way. The money you saved last month is still saved. The weight you lost is still gone. The mornings you remembered still happened.

None of that gets erased by one hard night. That’s the whole point. Track what actually accumulates, not just what resets.
